The Foundation's Ana María Campaign provides
Spanish language health information and referrals to
North Carolina's Latino population on topics ranging
from infant mortality awareness to women's health to
health insurance for children.
Background
The Latino population is the fastest growing ethnic
group in North Carolina
Language barriers and lack of information about
North Carolina's healthcare system often prevent
immigrants, including Hispanics/Latinos, from accessing
much needed health services
Culturally and linguistically appropriate health
information can increase Spanish speakers' abilities
to understand, accept, and utilize available health
services.
Goals
Increase awareness of infant mortality, women's
health and insurance programs among North Carolina's
Spanish speaking community
Increase the use of the bilingual NC Family Health
Resource Line (1-800-367-2229) among the state's
Spanish speakers
Educate Latino families about the importance of
child health insurance and provide enrollment information
for available state programs
Link Spanish speakers to health and social services
in their area
Audiences
Spanish-speaking men, women and families in North
Carolina, regardless of immigration status
Community organizations, religious groups, health
and human service providers, and local businesses
employing Latinos; businesses servicing Spanish-speaking
consumers; and other individuals or groups working
with Latino families
Campaign Activities
The foundation of the Ana María Campaign
is the development and distribution of bilingual
(English and Spanish), culturally appropriate, educational
materials that communicate a variety of program messages
Materials are distributed free of charge via the
Foundation Web site, mass-mailings, through professional
exhibiting and conference opportunities and in response
to catalog orders
Materials are also distributed to Hispanics/Latinos
in places they live, work, shop and worship
