Be Smart. Be Ready.

Free reproductive health services for qualifying men and women in North Carolina.

There are so many questions about your reproductive health:

  • Are you ready to be a parent?
  • Have you had a family planning exam lately?
  • Have you had all the children you want to have?

The good news is: it's up to you!

North Carolina offers free reproductive health services for eligible men and women. The Be Smart family planning program is designed to reduce unintended pregnancies and improve the well-being of children and families in North Carolina.

North Carolina residents who are eligible for these services receive:

  • annual family planning exams
  • most types of birth control
  • testing for pregnancy
  • testing for sexually transmittted infections
  • assistance in planning when to have a baby
  • voluntary sterilization

Who is eligible?

Women (ages 19 to 55) and men (ages 19 to 60) who are:

  • residents of North Carolina
  • U.S. citizens or qualified aliens
  • persons with income at or below 185% of the federal poverty level

To apply:

You can Opens in new window download an application from this Web site or call the Opens in new window NC Family Health Resource Line (see box below) to have a copy sent to you. Be Smart uses the same application as Health Check (Medicaid) and NC Health Choice for Children programs for free or low cost health insurance to children and teens.

Return your completed application by mail or in person to your county's Department of Social Services.
