Health Check (Medicaid) and NC Health Choice for Children

Health Check (Medicaid) and NC Health Choice for Children programs provide free or low cost health insurance to children and teens who qualify. This section has information about qualifying, benefits, and how to sign up.

Health Check (Medicaid) is North Carolina’s Medicaid program for children. NC Health Choice is health insurance for children of working families who don’t qualify for Health Check (Medicaid) but who may not be able to afford private insurance. The programs are funded by a combination of federal, state and county governments.

Application Information – Do You know About ePass?

ePASS is a quick and easy way for individuals and families to learn about and apply for available benefits and services. Online applications are available for Food and Nutrition Services (formerly Food Stamps) as well as Medical Assistance (Medicaid and NC Health Choice or CHIP). You can find additional information about:

  • Eligibility – Who can apply for Health Check and NC Health Choice (HC/NCHC)
  • Benefits – What services are covered
  • Cost – (Health Check – Medicaid) There are no yearly enrollment fees. (NC Health Choice) How much you pay depends on your family’s income
  • How to apply – Fill out one simple form (long or short version) — it’s easy! Your coverage could be: Affordable private health insurance plans that offer comprehensive coverage to help you stay well; a new tax credit that can immediately help pay your premiums for health coverage or free or low-cost insurance from Medicaid or North Carolina Health Choice/NCHC
  • Staying enrolled – Please note: HC/NCHC is not continuous coverage insurance. You must re-enroll each year to keep your child’s coverage.
