(Plain text version)
Before you get pregnant, have a medical exam. During the
exam, your doctor or nurse will ask you questions about your
medical history. He or she will want to know about:
- Diseases you or someone in your family may have
or had
- Drugs or medications you are taking (include prescription
and non-prescription medicines, vitamins or herbal supplements)
- Previous pregnancies
Some diseases run in families. These include diabetes (high
blood sugar), high
blood pressure, Tay-Sachs, sickle
cell and cystic
fibrosis. These might cause problems during pregnancy
or be passed on to the baby.
Some drugs, medications and herbal supplements may not
be safe during pregnancy. If you are taking any medicines
(prescription or non-prescription), tell your doctor or nurse.
Have you been pregnant before? If so, was the baby born
healthy? Did the baby need extra care? Were there any complications
during your pregnancy? Your doctor can use this information
to help you plan a healthy pregnancy.
His Medical History
Without your partner's medical history, you only know half
of the story. Have your partner talk with the doctor or nurse
about:
- Diseases he or someone in his family may have or had
- Drugs/medications he is taking (include prescription
and non-prescription, vitamins or herbal supplements)
- Other concerns he may have such as exposure to chemicals
on the job, etc.
