Child
Health Insurance
After applying
|
 |
Once your completed application is received by your local
county Department of Social Services (DSS), it is reviewed
to see if your child is eligible for Health
Check (Medicaid). If your child isn't eligible for Health
Check (Medicaid), the application is reviewed to see
if your child is eligible for
NC
Health Choice for Children.
The process may take up to 45 days.
If your child qualifies for Health
Check (Medicaid), the insurance may pay for medical
services your child received while you were waiting for
your child's application to be processed and for
up to three months before your
application date if you need this "retroactive" coverage.
You can note these old bills on the application
form. You can also
talk to your caseworker.
If your child is eligible for NC
Health Choice, coverage begins the first day of
the month that your application was received by your local
Department of Social Services (DSS).
You will also be notified if you have to pay an enrollment fee for NC Health Choice.
If your child is accepted in either program, you will receive
a health insurance card and a benefits booklet.
Note: You
must re-enroll each year to continue your child's
health insurance. About
10 months after you first enroll, you will receive
a re-enrollment package in the mail. Fill it out and return
it promptly to your local DSS.
If you move, be sure to let the DSS know
your new address or the re-enrollment package may not reach
you, and your child may lose their insurance!
How Do I Find A Doctor?
Health Check (Medicaid)
Once your child is enrolled in Health Check, you will choose
a primary care provider from a list of doctors who accept
Health Check. Your local DSS can
help you.
NC Health Choice
You can call any healthcare provider and ask if they take NC
Health Choice.
