Advising
As a state leader in infant mortality
reduction, the North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation
is instrumental in advising and educating policy makers
on issues pertaining to the health and well-being of
women and children in North Carolina.
The Foundation works with state and local officials
to promote policies and develop statewide goals and programs pertaining to the reduction of
infant death and illness including: promoting healthy
lifestyles for women of childbearing age, improving
access to available healthcare services, reducing the
risk of SIDS and increasing the availability of children's
health insurance. The Foundation also does qualitative research, makes program recommendations and supports funding related to issues directly affecting infant death and illness in the Tar Heel state.
Foundation efforts in 2003, contributed to legislation
and guidelines related to reducing SIDS deaths in
childcare settings. The 2003 N.C.
Prevent SIDS law has resulted in SIDS, formerly the number one cause of deaths in childcare settings, becoming a rare event.
Over the years, staff have been appointed to or advised a number of state-level task forces and groups such as the:
- N.C. Institute of Medicine's N.C. Healthy People 2020 Maternal and Infant Health Committee, Health Literacy Task Force and Adolescent Health Task Force
- N.C. Child Fatality Task Force, Perinatal Committee
- Justus-Warren Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Task Force
- North Carolina Coalition to Promote Health Insurance for Children
- N.C. Child Care Commission
- Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System Advisory Group
- Period of Purple Crying Leadership Team
- Health and Wellness Trust Fund grant review team
- N.C. Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities: Hispanic/Latino Health Advisory Group and grant review team
- North Carolina Reproductive Justice Coalition.
