North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation Receives 8 Awards
(Raleigh, NC) – The North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation (NCHSF) was recently honored for eight new outreach and information materials. APEX, a national organization which recognizes excellence in publications by professional communicators, awarded the Foundation two awards. One was for the Resources in Communities Helps Encourage Solutions (RICHES) pages on the NCHSF website www.NCHealthyStart.org. From mid-2007 to late 2008, grant funding from the N.C. GlaxoSmithKline Foundation funded RICHES, a pilot project whose goal was to identify and partner with community-based organizations across North Carolina that work directly with women of childbearing age on health related issues. The second award was for the development of the Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby publication in English and Spanish. The publications are used in public health prenatal clinics across the state. The pregnancy guide provides information on a variety of topics including prenatal care, what to expect during labor and what your maternity rights are in North Carolina.
The N.C. Healthy Start Foundation was also honored by the National Health Information Awards program which recognizes the nation's best consumer health information programs and materials. In 2009 more than 1,000 entries were received and judged by a panel of health information experts. Entries were grouped and judged by class, division and category. The Foundation received six awards for the following English and Spanish publications:
Consumer Decision-Making Information Poster
Not Now!
Health Promotion/Disease and Injury Prevention Information Booklet/Brochure/Pamphlet
My Health Journal
Mi Diario de Salud (My Health Journal-Spanish)
If You Smoke And Are Pregnant
The Not Now! poster highlights the N.C. Family Planning Waiver (Medicaid) program. My Health Journal/Mi Diario de Salud is an interactive journal that covers health topics, recommended check-ups and health goals for women ages 18-45. The journal allows women to record doctor appointments, test results and family health history information. If You Smoke and Are Pregnant is a self-help, quit smoking guide for women who are pregnant or thinking about starting a family.
"We are honored to be recognized with these awards," says Janice Freedman, Executive Director of the
North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation. "To fulfill our mission and dedication to the health and well-being of women and children in our state, we continually strive to make our health materials informative, interactive and compelling."
